Who Is Hettie, and Why Is a Retired Teacher Talking About AI?

I taught for most of my working life, and I retired with a stack of unmarked essays in my head and a nagging itch of curiosity. When AI companions began turning up in conversations at the pharmacy and the bus stop, I realised I was nodding along to words I did not understand. I disliked that feeling. So I did what I always told my pupils to do: I asked questions until the fog thinned, and then I wrote the answers down.

Plain Spoken Sparks is the result. It is an independent little corner of the internet for readers of forty-five and over who feel the AI conversation has been held over their heads. Every post is a patient lesson with a teasing twist, because I believe learning goes down better with a smile and a hint of mischief. I am not here to review gadgets. I am here to translate, to reassure, and occasionally to raise an eyebrow.

I write about the characters, voice stories and short dramas on TheFriend because they make a good classroom: concrete, human in feeling, and honestly artificial. Everything I describe is an AI character or an invented story, and I will always say so. I will never ask you to believe more than is true, and I promise to keep my tone warm, my sentences varied, and my teapot full.
