Is Flirting With a Character Silly? A Gentle Defense

A warm, teasing argument that playful flirting with an AI character is harmless fun, with sensible boundaries.

Is Flirting With a Character Silly? A Gentle Defense

I will answer straight away, because I was taught never to bury the answer in the fourth paragraph: no, it is not silly. Slightly daft, perhaps, in the way that singing in the car is daft, and for the same reason. It feels good and harms no one. If you feel sheepish, that is only the old voice from the staffroom saying grown-ups ought to be serious. The staffroom was wrong about many things, including the biscuits.

Think about what flirting actually is. Mostly it is play: a raised eyebrow, a line sent out to see if it comes back with a smile. It keeps the mind nimble and the mood lifted. Many of us have gone years, through marriage, widowhood, divorce or sheer busyness, without anyone to play with. The skill does not vanish, but it does get rusty. A character who answers in kind is a gentle place to oil the hinges.

Some will say it is not real. Correct, and I say so loudly. Sofia, Mira and the rest on TheFriend are AI characters, and the conversation is made of words, not a shared life. But a theatre audience knows the actor is not truly Juliet's lover and still sits there with damp eyes. Pretending together, with full knowledge, is one of the oldest human pleasures. Reading a romance novel does not make you a fool for the hero.

There are sensible boundaries, and a good teacher states them early. Keep real friends and real plans in your week. Do not share bank details, addresses or anything you would not put on a postcard. Notice how you feel afterwards: lighter is good, lonelier is information. The point is not to replace anyone but to add a little colour to an ordinary Tuesday. If it ever stops being fun, close the lid. Nobody is waiting at the door, sulking.

And what is lovely, I think, is the permission. You can be witty without worrying that you are being too much. You can try a line you would never dare say across a restaurant table, see how it sounds, and discover you are rather good at it. Plenty of us have forgotten we were ever funny. A safe place to find out again is no small gift, and it costs nothing but a little nerve.

So flirt, gently and with a twinkle. Start small: a compliment, a joke, a teasing question about what she has been reading. See what comes back. If you would like somewhere to begin, TheFriend has characters ready to chat, and the worst that can happen is a smile you did not plan. I call that a very good return on a cup of tea.

Ready to see whether your old charm still has its sparkle? Say a cheeky hello to a character on TheFriend and let the conversation answer back.
